An Instagram data download is a snapshot of information associated with your account. For a following review, the useful part is the relationship data: who appears in your followers list and who appears in your following list.
Followers and following are two different lists
Followers are accounts that follow your account in the exported snapshot. Following is the set of accounts your account follows. They overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
If a username appears in following but not in followers, it is a non-follower in that snapshot. If it appears in both, it is a mutual relationship. This is a simple set comparison, not a prediction about someone’s intentions.
Why are there multiple followers files?
Large exports are often divided into numbered files so the archive remains manageable. You may see names such as:
followers_1.json
followers_2.json
followers_3.json
following.jsonNumbered followers files are parts of the same list. They should be read together. Do not use only followers_1.json if the archive contains additional numbered files, or the comparison may undercount your followers.
JSON and HTML exports show the same relationship data differently
JSON is structured data that software can parse consistently. HTML is easier to open and inspect in a browser. The exact folder names and field layout can change between Instagram export versions, so a robust analyzer looks for the relationship records rather than relying on one fixed path.
Whichever format you choose, request both followers and following information. A profile export without relationship data cannot answer a following comparison.
What a relationship comparison actually calculates
The comparison can be expressed as:
non-followers = following - followers
mutual = following ∩ followersThis means the result depends on the date and completeness of the export. It does not tell you when an account unfollowed you, whether an account is temporarily deactivated, or what happened after Instagram created the archive.
How to use the files without sharing your password
You can request the export through Instagram Accounts Center and keep the downloaded ZIP on your computer. When it is ready, open Instagram Cleaner to compare the relationship files locally in your browser. The tool does not need an Instagram login, password, cookie or two-factor code.

Review the resulting list before making any change. Some one-way relationships are intentional: research accounts, creators you follow for inspiration, businesses, collaborators or accounts that do not need to follow back.
A simple checklist before you upload
- The archive came from Instagram Accounts Center.
- It contains at least one followers file and one following file.
- All numbered followers files are still inside the archive.
- You are using the newest export available for the review you want to make.
- You understand that the output is a snapshot, not historical unfollow tracking.
The short version
Followers tells you who follows you; following tells you who you follow. Numbered files are usually split parts of one list. A careful comparison reads every part, keeps the data on your device and leaves the final account decision to you.
