The fastest fix is usually to confirm that Instagram created a complete archive with both followers and following data. You do not need to log in to a third-party tool to diagnose the file.
Which message are you seeing?
Instagram reports a failed export in a few different ways, and the wording tells you which step broke:
- “Unable to complete export request” — the request itself did not go through. Submit it again from Accounts Center.
- “Your information is being prepared for export.” — this is a status, not a failure. Instagram is still building the archive; wait for the download to become available.
- “This may be a private account and cannot be exported” — confirm you are signed in to the account whose data you are requesting.
Where the export can fail
There are four different symptoms, and each points to a different fix:
- No download is available: the request is still processing or the link expired.
- A ZIP downloads but has no relationship files: the wrong information category was requested.
- The archive has one side only: followers or following was omitted.
- The analyzer reports an unreadable file: the archive is damaged, altered or in an unsupported format.
Work through these five checks
- The export is still being prepared
Instagram may show a request before the archive is ready. Return to Accounts Center and wait for the download to become available. A partial download can contain folders but not the relationship files the analyzer needs.
- The download link has expired
Request a fresh copy if the link no longer works. Save the new ZIP to your computer before opening or moving it.
- The ZIP is empty or incomplete
Check the file size and open the archive locally. You should find followers and following data, often under a connections or followers_and_following folder.
- The wrong information was selected
When requesting the export, include Followers and following. Selecting only profile information will not provide enough relationship data for a comparison.
- The browser cannot read the file
Use the original ZIP downloaded from Instagram. If you extracted and recompressed it, try the original archive or select the JSON/HTML relationship files directly.
What should be inside a usable export?
A usable archive contains at least one followers file and one following file. Depending on the export format and account size, Instagram may split followers into numbered files such as followers_1.json and followers_2.json. That is normal.
The file names and folders can change over time. What matters is that the archive includes the relationship data, not that it matches an older screenshot or tutorial exactly.
Try the original ZIP before extracting it
Instagram Cleaner can read the downloaded ZIP locally in your browser. Keeping the archive compressed avoids accidentally omitting a numbered followers file during manual extraction. If the ZIP still fails, select the relationship JSON or HTML files directly so you can isolate the file causing the problem.
When the archive is complete, open Instagram Cleaner and upload it from the “I already have my ZIP” option. The file is processed in your browser and is not sent to a server.
When the result looks incomplete
The report represents the snapshot contained in your latest export. It does not reconstruct historical unfollows, private account changes or activity that happened after the export was created. Re-request the data from Instagram if you need a newer snapshot.
Still stuck?
Make a fresh export, select both followers and following, choose JSON or HTML, and download the ZIP when Instagram marks it ready. Avoid uploading passwords, cookies or authentication codes anywhere. The only data needed for a relationship comparison is the export itself.
